Beware the Gamers

I’ve been role playing since around 2000/2001. Mostly Dungeons & Dragons, some Vampire: the Maquarade, some Exalted, a few sessions of Shadowrun. I am also a Christian.

Apparently I’m doing it wrong.

According to Jack Chick and his Dark Dungeon comics, I should be worshipping Satan. Corrupting and recruiting newbies into the cult. Throwing wild parties that climax in an orgy of an RPG.

Apparently I didn’t get the memo.

Jack Chick has been creating these comics since 1984 (The Escapist), and now, thanks to a successful Kickstarter with 849 backers pledging $25,287 out of the $12,500 goal, a movie is in the works based off his comics (Ralls).

Then there’s the first episode of the Dark Dungeons series… I’m not exactly sure if this is what resulted from the Kickstarter, or if it’s a separate production, but it’s ridiculous either way. ( Watch at your own risk. I wanted to bash my head off the wall, repeatedly, by 46 seconds in. In my 14 years of playing RPGs, I’ve never stood embraced in a dark cloak at the point of a pentagram painted on the floor to plot the corruption of newbies. I’ve never once sat amidst a party, in the dark, with candles and black crosses, to play Dungeons & Dragons.

Apparently I’m doing it wrong.

I was born and raised and still live in Central NY with my husband and our son. Despite having lived here my whole life, I still barely tolerate the cold winters. My full name is Ryan Greenfield. My mom used to watch Ryan's Hope, and named me after the little girl on the show. I chose to use my initials as my author name, not because I feel it's a "Man's World" and I have to in order to get ahead, but because R. S. Greenfield just sounds like a fantasy author (J. R. R. Tolkien, C. S. Lewis, J. K. Rowling ...). I've been going back to school for Creative Writing, and I'm down to two semesters left. I've always loved reading, my favorite authors and inspiration being David Farland and Stephen King. In addition to writing, I also love crafting and baking. I have a creative spirit and sometimes I can’t focus on just one thing. I like to joke about having multiple muses that argue across my shoulders over what I’m going to do on any given night.
